Election 2020: Kamala Harris is Breaking Barriers and Paving a Path Towards Parity In Leadership

On August 11th presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden announced that Senator Kamala Harris would serve as his running mate for the 2020 presidential election. The news was highly anticipated, as Biden firmly stated in early March during a presidential debate that he was committed to appointing a woman as Vice President. Harris is the third woman, first Black, and first Asian American candidate ever to be nominated as Vice President for a major US party. Harris also ran for the Democratic nomination in 2020 but suspended her campaign in December 2019. However, this nomination and possible win in November could launch her into a successful 2024 or 2028 presidential bid, giving the US its first woman president. Overall, Senator Harris’s nomination is a win for women’s representation in the US and around the globe.
